With Halloween done and dusted and all the creepy decorations and costumes put to rest, Christmas seems like the next big thing to hit our doorsteps. Hold on, what about November? Yes, we’ve got bonfire night, but aside from that it seems a rather dull month, right?
Wrong. In fact, it should be referred to as Movember, as the next 30 days shall see “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas” around the world champion a manly moustache to raise funds for men’s health.
What is Movember?
Starting out in 1999, the term “Movember” was coined by a group of young men who appeared on Australian news with the idea of raising money for charity by growing beards during November. Like so many other great ideas, the concept of Movember was brewed in none other than the lads’ local pub. Since then, it has become a worldwide phenomenon, with men, women and children participating on a global scale. The Movember Foundation is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global level. They have one goal: to stop men from dying too young.
The foundation prioritises three of the biggest health issues for men: testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health & suicide prevention. And just to give you an idea of the scale of these issues:
– Every minute, a man dies as a result of suicide
– Prostate cancer kills 35 men every hour
– Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men under the age of 40.
Movember is all about raising awareness for the countless lives lost to these prevalent men’s health issues and raising funds to put a stop to it. The Movember Foundation aims to half the number of deaths caused by prostate and testicular cancer in men by 2030, as well as reduce male suicides by 25% in the same period.
Obviously, not everyone can grow a sizeable beard, if one at all, but not to worry, as there are now other ways and means to take part.
How You Can Help
“Grow a Mo, save a Bro.”
For the Movember Foundation, the moustache is their ribbon. Whether you’re a clean-shaven kind of guy or sporting a thick, grizzly beard, you’re going to have to make a change either way to take part! Shave the beard down and let that moustache grow, then groom and maintain it for the duration of the month.
And for those feeling particularly brave, why not take things up a notch? While collecting your donations, add a touch of colour into the fray; the highest donor gets to choose what colour you dye it!
